Fadumo Qasim Dayib, nicknamed Deeqo -which means "Gift" in Somali-, is a Somali politician and the first woman to run for President of Somalia, standing for the November election.
Early life and education
Dayib was born in in Thika, Kenya to Somali parents.[1][2] Her mother travelled there after losing eleven previous children to preventable diseases.[3] Her father, who was a truck driver, gave her mother and young brother a boost.
They married on their way to Kenya and settled in Thika. Both of her parents were illiterate yet her father spoke several languages. And her mother was an enterprising business woman, who sold tea by the roadside.[4] She had two more siblings born in Kenya.[2] Her parents divorced when she was young.[2] Her family were expelled from Nairobi in and deported to Mogadishu.[3] Her mother was temporarily imprisoned because her brother was suspected of funding a group opposed to Siad Barre.[5] Dayib's mother sold everything to enable her and her siblings to escape as refugees to Finland, where she has lived since [6][3]
Dayib did not learn to read and note until she was fourteen years old.[2] She studied in Finland to become a critical take care of nurse, earning two master's degrees.[3][2] She won a fellowship to the Harvard Kennedy School to study public administration.[6][7] She is a doctoral candidate at the University of Helsinki researching Together Nations Security Council Resolution (Peace, Women and Security).[1][2][7]
Career
Dayib is a social change activist, a widespread health expert and a progress practitioner.
Visions of change in Somalia have often crumbled amid harsh circumstances, but Dayib sees the Somalian presidential election as an opportunity to turn her dreams into reality and to inspire others to share the responsibility of making their nation and our world a beat place. We sat down to talk with Dayib during the last few days of the fall semester at Harvard Kennedy School HKSa time of peaceful energy on a usually bustling campus. As Dayib spoke, her presence lit up the room as she discussed her visions for Somalia and the modify she wants to make in leading the nation as its first elected female president. Her motivation comes from a personal place.She has worked in the private sector on employment for refugees.[3] She worked for the United Nations in Somalia setting up maternal health clinics in but was evacuated due to security concerns. She then set up HIV prevention offices and trained health care providers for the UN in Fiji and , Fadumo became the first Somali woman to ever hold the position of region director in UN Somalia.[5]
Dayib announced her intention to run for President of Somalia in in the first democratic elections to be held since [8] She was one of eighteen presidential candidates in , including incumbent Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and eventual winner Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed.
She was the only female. Her decision to stand for the presidency attracted death threats.[6][3] Her platform included anti-corruption policies, taking on female genital mutilation, conclusion the clan-based governance system and dialoguing with al-Shabaab to urge the group to cut their ties to international terrorist organisations and stop killing Somalis.[3][4] She said that she had very little chance of winning because of corruption and the clan-based governance system.[1]
Personal life
Dayib has four children.[3][7] She has declared her intention to continue existence involved in the betterment of Somalia even after the election.[8][5] Fadumo currently lives in Nairobi with her family.
